Despite the cancellation of the original ‘Star Trek’ series after only three seasons, through constant repeat runs over the next few years the show gained a huge popularity and fan-following. It was this success that subsequently prompted Paramount to attempt to revive the series for television in the early Seventies, with the proposed ‘Star Trek - Phase II’, featuring the return of the original crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. However, this idea was then scrapped when it was decided to make feature films of ‘Star Trek’ instead.

The result was ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’, cinematically released in 1978. Despite being a very slow and drawn out affair, it was still very well received, and a sequel, ‘Star Trek II - The Wrath of Kahn’ was subsequently released; this proved to be a huge hit with audiences, and the series of movies continued for a further six instalments, before the original Enterprise crew handed over the reins to the crew of the Enterprise-D in ‘Star Trek: Generations’.

To date there have been three movies to feature the adventures of the ‘Next Generation’ crew. The series then went full circle in 2009, when 'Star Trek XI' gave viewers the adventure that brought a young Kirk and Spock together for the very first time...
